Will Hyundai Build the Santa Cruz or Not?



The Hyundai Santa Cruz is a very interesting pickup truck concept. That can leave one wondering if Hyundai will actually build it, or if it is more of some design exercise. After doing some reading I really think that Hyundai will build the Santa Cruz.

One of the biggest reasons is its potential to have great fuel economy. The Santa Cruz will likely be offered as a diesel. That engine would likely be a 2.0-liter turbo delivering 190 hp and 300 lb-ft of torque. That diesel engine will be more fuel efficient than a petrol counterpart, and that's a good thing because people currently prioritize fuel economy when buying, and it also helps Hyundai to meet corporate average fuel economy (CAFE) targets.

The full-size and mid-size pickup segment is pretty full of options already. Hyundai is instead going for a small pickup. This will give people the utility of a truck with the fuel efficiency of a car -- a double win. Hyundai believes that this will appeal to millennials who are residing in cities and owning less vehicles per family than the previous generation.

The Santa Cruz will also be cheap to produce because it shares a platform with the Hyundai Tucson. Mike O'Brien, Hyundai Motor America's VP of product planning, says that sharing the platform " really helps mange the cost of engineering, helping us make it a competitively priced product." Introducing the Santa Cruz will help to double the amount of cars that Hyundai builds based on the platform. The Tucson sells about 50,000 each year, and Hyundai believes that the Santa Cruz will sell the same or more.

There seems to be a lot of reasons why Hyundai should build the Santa Cruz, though Hyundai has said that it has not made a final decision on production yet. We will just have to keep our ears open for news on production in the future.

I've already noticed a lot of people with full size SUV's moving to trucks of equivalent displacement and size, with the same option available for those in smaller SUV's the same transition can be expected.

It seems to me that if Hyundai really believes that the Santa Cruz can sell more than 50,000 units per year, they should definitely build it. Besides Hyundai should be looking to add some trucks, SUVs, and CUVs to their lineup .

Chances are that's what they've seen the potential for with this product since I doubt they're at the point when they want to create it as a micro-niche product.

yea but what is that forecat based on? everyone says this is the truck the market needs but the market has rejected this type of truck severl times over...I dont care what madmen on the internet say, whats the appetite in mid ohio or wyoming?

Good point.

The way I see it, guys that need a truck for pay load and all the heavy duty things most can do in comparison to other vehicles won't be interested in it.

The 2015 Toyota Tacoma isn't doing too bad this year as a mid sized truck. If Hyundai can modify the concept a bit to compete with the Tacoma I don't see why they won't be able compete in the truck market. They're only in the concept stage right now so there's still plenty of time to improve on it.

That's a direction I would prefer rather than it just being a Santa Fe with the back chopped off, at least then they can target those that actually need a work truck and those that see trucks like this as a great alternative to a SUV

Agreed. I can't see much people wanting the smaller truck bed and passenger cabin. I think the concept model is lacking in rear passenger seats which is a must in all trucks.
