Cooler for bed With a Tonneau Cover

1153 Views 11 Replies 8 Participants Last post by  GaryH
I am looking for cooler options that would fit the bed of the Santa Cruz when the Tonneau cover is closed. I figured this would max the cooler height (with wheels or not) at 17 inches. That isn't big. I was hoping for a good size cooler that can be used for road tripping. Thoughts or suggestions?

I know I can keep a cooler in the cab, but that is not the goal of our setup.

We measured carefully and bought a Kong 50 quart cooler. It fits just fine under the tonneau cover.

This is the cadillac (Genesis?) of coolers and is on the pricey side. It has plenty of insulation. It does not come with wheels and in fact has rubber feet which has the positive feature that it won't slide around, but also, you have to physically pick it up to move it (since it won't slide). It is also bear proof if that is a consideration for you.

We are very happy with it and no bears attacked the SC when we camped in Shenandoah National Park.

I grabbed 2 of these on Black Friday and they have been brilliant: 32 QT Ultra-Light Cooler | RTICOutdoors.com

I've got an Igloo IMX 24 fits perfect under the cover.
For anyone looking for a freezer that fits, I took the rubber feet off an Iceco JP40 Pro and it's a perfect fit as well.
I've got Hyundais bedmat fwiw

I have questions.

1. Can you plug that into the back of the bed? I know that isn't a strong outlet, but is it enough to keep the freezer going and keep the ice frozen in between camp sites? I figure to let the cooler stay cold on it's own, and then REFREEZE every time we drive to the next site? Would that work?

2. If we had meals in tupperware, how many meals could we fit in that?

3. I measured 17" to the cover, but that cooler is 18+". How does it even scrape closed?

The RTIC 65 is an absolutely perfect fit as long as you keep it to the side of the yellow lock knob. There’s about half an inch of clearance.

Looks like you don’t have a bed liner either. I suspect a bed liner might derail the fit with the RTIC.
Yeah that looks light.

1. You're not going to refreeze anything unless you're driving 8+ hours. You will drop the temp back down tho. But unless it's the winter, 4hrs of run time is not enough to keep things frozen for the the other 20 hours. Especially because we usually are driving the hottest point in the day 10am-2pm. Especially opening it to pull out meals throughout the day.
I deep freeze before I leave, will run the freezer and all it's content as low as it goes before putting it into the truck. I try not open the freezer while the sun is up. I have some blue ice blocks that I cycle between the powered freezer and ice cooler. I move the days food from the freezer into the cooler. Any time you open the freezer you let the heat in and the work out.

2. Tupperware takes up a lot of space, you're essentially putting your dishes into the freezer with your food. Ziplock everything. Maximize your freezer space.

3. I've got 18" of clearance with a bed mat. Are you measuring to yellow tonneau switch? How'd you get 17"?

Not sure if you were referring to my previous post or not, but if you were; Thats a Limited bed with factory bed liner/coating and tonneau cover. I don’t have any additional liner installed in the bed. Any additional surface in the bed that’s greater than about 1/2” would preclude the RTIC 65 from fitting.
Yes Silky Smoov, I was referring to your post. I have the Limited with the OEM bed liner and it likely would be a very tight fit, with that cooler, if it fit at all.
