I have a 2.5 non turbo sel. When I set the cruise the speed fluctuates up and down a couple of miles per hour. Then the slightest I mean slightest of inclines and it shifts out of overdrive and right to 3000 rpm and stays there for most of the ride. Fuel economy with cruise is 2 mpg less then if I keep speed myself. Is anyone else experiencing this issue?

Sounds normal. FYI 7th and 8th are both overdrive ratios so is it dropping to 6th or less? I've never had a vehicle that got better mpg using cruise than I could get without using it. The driver has an advantage over cruise because we take in many factors and adjust throttle accordingly, and respond in advance. Cruise only detects changes in "load" with no way to anticipate. Cruise is more a convenience than fuel saving feature.

I also have an SEL with no turbo. A few months ago I left the St. Louis area for an eight or so hour drive back home. It was very early in the morning. I set the cruise control for the legal limit. I noticed the headlights of another vehicle holding some car lengths behind. After quite a while that vehicle passed me. It was a sheriff’s deputy watching to see if I would speed. The cruise control was very steady. The road was not very hilly.

Mine holds fairly steady but my speedometer is 1-2 mph high (depending on speed) according to the GPS and radar signs
Car manufacturers will normally deliberately calibrate their speedos to read ‘high’ by a certain amount.
There is a federal regulation since 2005 - speedometer must be accurate to within a plus or minus 5 mph at a speed of 50 mph.

So it’s not a precision instrument lol…

Tire inflation and tread wear will impact your speedometer reading.

Highways generally have mile markers on the side of the road. At 60 miles per hour you cover one mile in one minute. I have often checked my actual speed using the second hand on a watch and the mile markers by the side of the road. I usually do that test over a five mile stretch, in case of any anomalies. Then I divide by the number of miles to get seconds per mile. It is easy to factor for other speeds, like 65 MPH or 70 MPH. Then I know what the speedometer should read to travel a certain speed.

Every vehicle I've owned the cruise control fluctuates 1 or 2 MPH up or down as conditions changes. After all its a reactive system - as you up a hill it will slow down then the computer will see this and speed up to compensate. Maintaining the exact speed perfectly will actually waste fuel as it constantly adjusts. A person can modulate the pedal much smoother, it just gets tiresome which is why cruise control was invented. Same goes for LKA assist, its good but a human is still better at making those slight adjustments to road conditions.

There is a fairly steep downhill as you leave my town. As the P.D. enforces the 45 mph limit pretty strictly, I've used my cruise to keep my lead foot in check for years. My old Rav4 actually used to downshift on that stretch to keep me within 1-2mph of the limit. My SEL SC usually runs me up to 3 or 4 over.

This explanation sounds right to me, and what I've experienced with my SEL non turbo. I like the controls and the display for this function, as well.

When cruising on highways - best results come when using adaptive cruise control, usually HDA is engaged as well… Ive had results of f 36 to 38 mpg
There is no way your getting that mileage. If these vehicles were capable of that kind of mileage they would advertise the sh*t out of that. Adaptive cruise is not available on all vehicles. Also it simply slows the vehicle down so you don't have to then speeds it back up at a extremely fast rate. Not very fuel efficient.

Well, this just got awkward for you 🤪😂
Anyway, as I said it’s cruising - not city or stop and go driving…
Image is from last year on the interstate, can’t recall if it was TN or VA..

Sorry still don't believe it. Your the only person on this sight that I've seen report that kind of mileage. Also a little suspect you have a picture of it saved🤔

@GTAcruz, not putting words in your mouth. You do indeed get very good mileage.
@New to the game, Look at the time vs distance….that’s no more than approx 60 - 65 mph average, I suspect. Which is fine, no issues. If you drive 60 and be easy on it, I’ll bet you can get good mileage also. 75-80 mph? I think it would be hard pressed to do mpg like that, unless the trip is downhill a lot.

GTAcruz got scammed with average mpg average.

I drove the Hyundai Santa Fe at 80 mph at 13 mpg, but it was telling me I got 26 mpg average trip.

GTAcruz got bamboozled with his average mpg trip. If you look at first trip and the remaining miles, then the total of the trip add to 305 miles. Divide it by the tank capacity of 17.7 gallons and that is 17.23+/- mpg. There is no way GTAcruz is averaging 36-38 mpg.

The second is 405 miles divided by 17.7 equals 22.88+/- mpg.

GTAcruz would need to get 637 miles between fill up to average 36 mpg.

Ya, wouldn’t rely on the DTE (fuel gauge is almost 1/2 tank, and showing 124 DTE) - DTE of 0 miles there’s a reserve of 7 litres, so that would work out to 576 miles 😁

I thought the same thing when looking at my fuel gauge. After I started it back up after my 250 mile trip back home the fuel gauge went down really fast and I was out of gas really quick.

Once you turn off the car, the trip reset to 0 and that is when they scam you. Your remaining miles stay the same. You are not going to get another 295 miles.

If you keep on driving, your average mileage will drop really fast.

The remaining estimate mile is pretty close to what you have left. You might squeeze out another 200 miles, but you will never get another 295 miles.

Edmund rated it at 477.9 maximum range on highway. How are you going to get 576? Manual or cruise control will not get you another 98 miles.

You have to chalk this one up as busted.
