Dual Clutch vs the regular auto

I've heard there have been issues w/the dual clutch. Not sure if it's people treating these like a tacoma or a ranger or a jeep, or if it's just issues all around. I can confirm the tiny lag before the vehicle moves forward. Other than that, the thing screws. What benefits does it provide, if any? Or is it just a coolness factor like other Autostick transmission set ups.

For one, the “lag” isn’t the wDCT…
DCTs are a much more efficient in transferring more of the power to the wheels, than a slush box.
Why do you think the turbo has almost identical EPA mpg numbers than the N/A engine with much less horsepower and torque… less is lost in the transmission…
Its advantage is the efficiency and quick, crisp shifts…

It‘s downside is in the low end, crawling in 1st gear… especially when used for towing or off road. As one who doesn’t tow or off road, it’s been great and trouble free - as a manual driver, I hate the sluggish ness of a traditional slush box…

I'd like to hear from our more technical forum members. I think the verdict on how well the WDCT holds up is still to be determined and will likely take some time before we know. The existing issues that are highly talked about i don't think are the fault of the WDCT not doing it's job, it's been the Transmission oil pump failing, which then leads to the transmission failing. That is what happened to me.
Please chime in.
It's been great off-road, you just can't baby it in 1st and 2nd or it will slip the clutch instead of finding the gear. Give it some beans and stay in 3rd, off-road I pretty much stay in 3rd between 2500-3500 rpm, I down shift to second and rev it for steep uphills. I try to keep the gears always working so I know the clutch isn't doing anything silly to compensate. Hit the dif lock and the down hill speed control and stay off the brakes unless you actually need to. The weight transfer on these is insanely predictable, sliding is easily corrected even at speed.

On road, I have also not had any issues with the DCT, but I try to drive without hesitation and be purposeful with each action. When you let up on the throttle while the truck is trying to figure out what to do, it won't act predictably.

Try a throttle controller to get rid of that first second of lag.

Has the Phoenix risen?

There are two types of transmission oil pump in the service manual for the 2022 Hyundai Santa Cruz. One is the High Pressure Electric Oil Pump and the the other is a High Flow Electric Oil Pump.

Electric motor can fail under constant use like long trip. Overheating can cause an electric motor to fail. There is a thin layer of enamel coating separate the wire in the coil. Heat can damage the enamel and short the wires together in the coil. There is also the build up of brush dust on the commutator causing a short circuit.

There can also be a defect where the contact brush can chip or break and not make proper contact. Another defect could be transmission oil leaking through the pump seal and entering the electric motor causing a short.

My guess would be the High Pressure Electric Oil Pump failed and couldn't shift the transmission into gear. The limp mode would shift it into low gear.

Same here. It shifts fast and seamless, way better then any automatic I've owned.

So far I have towed 700 miles and DCT has performed like a champ, no problems and zero regrets. Will it survive the full 10y/100k of the warranty? Time will tell... but all my original concerns have faded away. No lag between shifts and the ability to force an upshift or downshift at any time makes it a great transmission in a towing application. The slippage and roll back aren't as bad as I thought they would be, using autohold helps. Zero issues pulling out of slippery boat ramps, however I've yet to try the two most challenging ramps in my area.

Sorry for the off topic question. Are you using the stock tires? I've had some challenges with slippery boat ramps this year (not with a SC.)

Stock tires. None of these ramps were an issue with my 2WD Dakota either except on very rare occasions. Not sure where you are at but in FL where I am we don't get a big tide swings (only 3-4 feet) so I can normally keep my rear tires above the seaweed / algae line.
Would be cool if these did have an old school manual.

My SC is slightly modified and the DCT has kept up fine. A few recall "electronic updates" were certainly unwelcomed and affected performance for sure, however have since been corrected and is running great now. Running consistant low 5 second 0-60 times without the recent exhaust mods. So not terrible. Haven't had a Subbie keep up yet but I live in Reno where the locals cant drive and the non-locals are from California so they cant drive but are a**holes about it. So there's that. 😆
You sound like you speed 😂
Coming respectfully from a guy who's bagged a 120mph+ speeding ticket in a county I live no where near.
I don't speed if I'm farther than a hundred miles from my house 😂.
You Reno guys do 70 in 45s all night long, and your sheriffs are looking for CA plates, cause we just have to send the money cause we're 400 miles away and not coming back for traffic court.

👍🏼

Hahaha! I drive briskly to the speed limit then creep to 5 over typically. The Mrs is 25 years with the Sherrif's dpt so I don't go too crazy. But yes... they do look for out of state plates as does California when I visit. They have followed me for miles looking for reasons at times. It is more prevalent in various areas for sure but Reno, Vegas and Cali are all the same. They have to hit quotas.

But you are right about people in Reno speeding. I can drive to Carson on the interstate doing 80 in a 70 and people fly by like you're doing 50 in the slow lane. Lol

(I am originally from Tampa, FL so I'm still bitter about west coast driving etiquette... lol)
