Heavy hood!

I'm overly-cautious I guess, but I like to check the oil level on turbo and supercharged engines early in the game to make sure there's no bad seals or whatever to allow oil to be sucked into the intake.

But boy, when I lifted that hood, I knew it wasn't aluminum! And I also wished there were some aftermarket gas struts we could install. Anyone have any ideas on that?

Ha! No doubt. First time I lifted that hood I was shocked. Haven't hoisted a hood like that since the 8 foot (or close enough) monster on a 74 Gran Torino ... and it had springs to help. :p I feel like they could have shaved a couple hundred pounds off the curb weight by using aluminum for the hood. Okay, maybe not a COUPLE hundred ...

All the aftermarket kits I've seen have been proprietary, since the mounts have to accommodate the bodywork that is unique on the vehicles and the unique lengths of the strut.
Yeah I was shocked. I think the little stand can barely keep it up
Someone will likely produce a gas strut lift kit. My Veloster N is surprisingly heavy too. There is now a kit for that..

I was shocked too when I went to open the hood. Originally, I thought something was wrong. Some gas struts would be nice or some counterweight springs.

As someone who has two vehicles with aluminum hoods one drawback is rock chips. Aluminum is soft thus it is easy to ding up. Now the carbon fiber hood on my C7 is nice and light :D makes aluminum seem heavy.

Pfft carbon fiber, our C5 has sheet molded composite hood, just like space-age tupperware, and we can make our headlights disappear. Lets see you do that with your fancy schmancy new technology!

Friday night I realized how heavy duty the hood really is. We were traveling in the inside (Passing Lane) on a 4 lane highway. The right lane was full of cars we were passing there were 3 or 4 cars and 1 or 2 behind me in a train as we were passing. Without warning one of the cars a ahead of us in my lane blew a tire. There was no option for swerving and everyone was slowing and trying to get stopped. A road gator probably 4 to 5 inches wide and probably 8 to 9 inches long hit the hood in the front. Vanna got herself smacked in the forehead. Saturday morning I looked at it and she had some skid marks on the hood. I grabbed fresh swifter refill and gently wiped away the tire smudge. I was expecting there to be a dent since the projectile had hit the hood then the windshield pretty hard. I was pleasantly surprised that it cleaned right up without any residue.
Awesome!

Wow. Lucky it wasn't an 18-wheeler retread ... those things can weight 50 or 60 pounds and go right through a windshield!

Sounds like we need some carbon fiber hoods and gas strut kits cause I said the same **** thing. Not so limited when I gotta use an old school prop. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Yeah, that seems kind of chintzy on a truck this pricey. It'll take some hefty struts to hold this sucker up, though!
I just use the Hood as part of my daily workout 5 reps of 10 lifts on that bad boy....

Funny you should mention that about the Maverick. On my long drive home I noticed when a big diesel truck passed me going the other direction on the two lane highways the SC hood would flex dramatically. It seemed like it was moving about an 1" higher than the fender at the windshield corner. It shocked me so much, that I actually checked to be sure all the bolts were attached at the rest stop. Nothing was missing or loose. In fact, I could barely flex it at all with my hand.

I'm guessing what was happening is the massive wind blast from the diesel was entering the grill area and has no easy place to escape, thus the force was pushing up on the hood from within. But that's just a guess. Watch for it when you hit your first road trip.

I see the same thing right above the wipers - the hood jumps up and down and just looks flimsy - maybe because it's so far between attachments. The front is latched tightly, but at highway speed, the hood definitely moves a lot - it's a little concerning

I saw the same thing and was also concerned, then I remembered that my mid 90's F150 did the same thing.

I also noticed the heavy hood. My previous truck was a 2006 Mazda B3000 - same as a Ford Ranger. The hood on that truck was light as a feather. A gas strut would be nice.

If you think the SC hood flexes bad, drive a RAV4. My 2020s wasn't as bad as my wife's 2016, the first time on the interstate I pulled over and checked the latches.
