Please Allow Disabling Remote Tailgate Release

2203 Views 55 Replies 25 Participants Last post by  MnS
The top of my tailgate, mainly on the plastic, now has several scratches from my garage door opening. How? Why? You may ask. The problem is the button on the remote only needs to be pressed for less than a second to lower the liftgate. Twice now, while I've been in the house, with the remote in my pocket, the liftgate was lowered unintentionally because the button somehow got pushed. Then I go to leave and the garage door (rollup type) goes thwackity thwackity thwackity on the liftgate as it rises.

They either need to require the button to be pressed for a longer period - at least 4 seconds, or have an option to disable remote release of the liftgate in the vehicle settings.

Hyundai sends me an alert if my doors are left unlocked - perhaps they can send a message when the tailgate is left down for extended periods of time when the vehicle is locked.

How did you disable it?
The dealer disabled the Outback, but for the Sportage there is a button in the menu on the infotainment screen. The Ridgeline has a manual cable to unlock the tailgate, so I imagine Hyundai could design something similar. It's underneath the bottom right hand corner of the tailgate.

Do you have keys attached to the FOB? Maybe they are hitting the button.

I would put a piece of tape under the FOB button to keep it from making contact internally, this way the tailgate itself still works normally.

I've never had the tailgate nor windows down problem. My FOB lives in only two places: sitting on the counter in the kitchen or in that little coin / iPod Nano pocket in my jeans... its never triggered accidentally.

Wow I was very wrong about the tailgate it only operates with " Electrical Power " and it works even when the doors are locked... so that really sucks ..... so anything you leave in the floor trunk compartment is accessible at any time... open the tail gate then open the trunk compartment and your contents can be gone.... this really concerns me...
hopefully someone can come up with a solution to this . so what good is a trunk compartment in the floor that you can't lock. ??? as I keep tools and other valuable items it the trunk....

NOTE: I had the key fob on me that's why they compartment and tailgate did not lock..Lesson learned... Thanks JMII for making me aware of my mistake...

This is my first ever NON American manufactured vehicle..yes I know its made in the US. and there are so many differences most I like . but some are really strange..
and it works even when the doors are locked
Huh??? do you have the FOB on you? If so that is why its unlocked... otherwise it stay locked just like the doors and fuel filler.

If possible, did you ever consider backing into your garage, so that the front of the SC is facing the garage door?

Don't feel bad. I did exactly the same thing. Had my SC a month. Still haven't completely read the owners manual and no way to remember
everything in it anyway. Still have the infotainment manual to conquer after that. Sometimes when I walk into the garage I'm sure I hear my
SC saying, 'Here comes that dumb azz again'.

Then the driver's door would be right next to some storage shelves - not an option.

What happens is when you go to open the door/tailgate the SC sends a signal to the FOB, if the FOB is within range it transmits back a "yep ok to open" message. Same concept as push button ignition.

The reason the car sends the signal is too keep the FOB batteries from dying. Most people think the FOB and car are constantly communicating but no, your action is what starts the sequence. This action can be you touching the handle or pressing the FOB button. So technically you could remove all the buttons from the FOB and it would still work perfectly. However that forces you to do all locking and unlocking using the touch sensitive door handles on the SC as shown in this video.

Also all vehicles work this way, so its not a foreign thing. My Corvette behaves exactly the same as the SC - FOB in range? Doors can be opened. FOB too far enough away? Doors stay locked. This includes the hatch and fuel filler door as well.

This happened to me as well. My key fob was in my pocket and somehow the tailgate was open. When I opened the door in the morning I thought the door was off the track, then saw it was hitting my tailgate. I thought my tailgate was scratched all to ****! Luckily only a small scratch. I am not sure the garage door made a thwackity thwackity thwackity sound though. Al I could here was me cussing!

I had the remote window down problem a couple of times. Only things in my pocket are fob with 1 key, and my edc sharp pointy thing. I determined the clip on the edc was the only thing that could be pressing the button. Since I don't use the clip, I removed it. Bought a fob case for extra "safety". Never happened again. Point being; try to determine what's in your pocket that might press the button and eliminate that item from that pocket if possible.

another thought if the doors are locked the tail gate should not open until they are unlocked... i tried the handle release on the tailgate while the doors were lock and the tailgate would not open..

NOTE: the tailgate DOES NOT LOCK WHEN THE DOORS LOCK,,(i just checked on my SEL),,,so access to the trunk compartrment in the bed is accessible anytime... NOT GOOD...
Unless the 23s are different than my 22, when the doors are locked the tailgate IS locked. If the doors are locked(and the tailgate) you can drop the gate by pushing the button on the handle IF you have the fob in your pocket.

Yes I had the key fob in my pocket... it was my mistake..
they lock ..
Same with the gas filler cover, as long as the doors are locked, the flap and tailgate are locked- unless, you are within 1 metre or so with the fob in range

Fob is on my key chain - can't really remove the keys. Most likely happens when sitting down and doing something like tying or untying my shoes. I performed surgery on my fob and rmoved a tiny piece of rubber that touches button and inserted some tape over the hole. Unnecessary problem solved. :p

Ok
Just tested
Doors locked, gas lid locked, tailgate still opens with fob button

fwiw, the Chevy I traded in for the SC had a tailgate that behaved exactly the same. Except that 2 out of 3 attempts to release the tailgate with the "manual" release button would fail because the release wouldn't open all the way.

As it should.

I bought this key fob cover from Amazon and at first I didn't like it because it made the buttons hard to push, but I've never experienced an accidental push of any button. You can try it and see if it helps you out. Tengare Car Key Fob Cover Compatible with Hyundai Keychain Holder Protector Case Automotive Accessories Black https://a.co/d/aVi2OIj

Isn’t the easy answer here to take your keys out of your pocket when you get into the house?
