Please Allow Disabling Remote Tailgate Release

2201 Views 55 Replies 25 Participants Last post by  MnS
The top of my tailgate, mainly on the plastic, now has several scratches from my garage door opening. How? Why? You may ask. The problem is the button on the remote only needs to be pressed for less than a second to lower the liftgate. Twice now, while I've been in the house, with the remote in my pocket, the liftgate was lowered unintentionally because the button somehow got pushed. Then I go to leave and the garage door (rollup type) goes thwackity thwackity thwackity on the liftgate as it rises.

They either need to require the button to be pressed for a longer period - at least 4 seconds, or have an option to disable remote release of the liftgate in the vehicle settings.

Hyundai sends me an alert if my doors are left unlocked - perhaps they can send a message when the tailgate is left down for extended periods of time when the vehicle is locked.

another thought if the doors are locked the tail gate should not open until they are unlocked... i tried the handle release on the tailgate while the doors were lock and the tailgate would not open..

NOTE: the tailgate DOES NOT LOCK WHEN THE DOORS LOCK,,(i just checked on my SEL),,,so access to the trunk compartrment in the bed is accessible anytime... NOT GOOD...
I've previously checked on my Limited and the tailgate DOES lock when the doors are locked. BUT IF you have your fob on you, it will allow the tailgate to be opened even with the doors locked.

Lock the doors , take the fob in the house, then try the tailgate, it should be locked.

Don’t forget too…the OP said they corrected the issue by preforming minor surgery to their fob.

So the issue has been resolved.

Unless you leave you fob in your pocket…@gecsr01 lol

Personally, I would rather leave the fob in my pocket and suffer the consequences, than lose it or leave it somewhere unknowingly.

The latter part of that sentence is easily done,(but only when you are in a hurry and need it now) which is why I have a tile on my key ring, my most frequent pocket dial/button press (if the keys/fob is in my pocket) is to press the tile button that finds the phone sitting in the charger - when i'm not looking for it

The tailgate will not open if the doors are locked IF the remote is out of range. The only reason it opened with the doors locked is that the remote was most likely in your pocket and in proximity range. I've had to OP's issue happen to me twice when the remote must have been activated by accident in my pocket, and learned that if the doors are locked and the remote is not in range, the tailgate remains locked. For this reason I no longer keep the remote in my pocket, rather I keep it inside the house by the door to the garage and take it with me when I leave. No more issues.
Wow I was very wrong about the tailgate it only operates with " Electrical Power " and it works even when the doors are locked... so that really sucks ..... so anything you leave in the floor trunk compartment is accessible at any time... open the tail gate then open the trunk compartment and your contents can be gone.... this really concerns me...
hopefully someone can come up with a solution to this . so what good is a trunk compartment in the floor that you can't lock. ??? as I keep tools and other valuable items it the trunk....

NOTE: I had the key fob on me that's why they compartment and tailgate did not lock..Lesson learned... Thanks JMII for making me aware of my mistake...

This is my first ever NON American manufactured vehicle..yes I know its made in the US. and there are so many differences most I like . but some are really strange..
The tailgate locks with the doors if the remote is out of range. You can verify this yourself. That's what keeps people from having full access to the bed area and the storage compartment.

HaHa. I also have a Tile on my key ring and frequently accidentally press the “find” button on it when my fob is in my pocket. Fortunately, I have a fob case that keeps me from accidentally pressing buttons on my remote.
I have never had this issue. I did once have my windows rolled down by the key fob
Window roll down by pressure on remote while in your pocket is gonna sink the ship in an overnight rain storm. I and others here have complained about this to Hyundai.
ohh to the OP...get a cover for the key fob. Its helped me avoid these issues.

aloha mike
This seems like the best option. Much better than messing with the electronics to disable it.

Isn’t the easy answer here to take your keys out of your pocket when you get into the house?
Sure, if you go right into your house every time after pulling into the garage.

What if you pull into the garage and immediately start working in the garage, working in the yard, unloading bags of bark dust or pieces of lumber and moving them to the back yard or taking the recycling out to the side of the garage after parking the vehicle?

Depending on where you live and your local crime rates, it's best to keep the house locked and the garage door down as much as possible if you're not inside the garage, while keeping your keys in your pocket.

Porch pirates really love open, unattended garages.
I would assume that in the tailgate there is a solenoid or electrical item that when you push the release button is activated to release the tail gate lock. disconnecting the power to the release mechanism would solve that problem. Note : THIS IS WRONG it is all electrical operated no manual release...
Hoo needs a power tailgate, not as bad as headlights n turn signals were the bumper sopposed to b! I'm buy toyota
Hey! Look who’s back!!! Rollthedice? 2ndchance? Now it’s Jimmy come lately!!

Interesting. I have to hold the button on the fob at least four seconds for the gate to open.
