Removing factory installed side steps

13273 Views 94 Replies 29 Participants Last post by  JohnJoseph
Bought a Santa Cruz Limited that came with factory side steps. Didn't want them but the vehicle was available. Sure miss going onto a new car lot and looking at a dozen vehicles or so!

When I pull the side steps off will there be anything missing that needs to be put on? I was hoping once they were taken off everything would be just like from the factory. But after looking at the install instructions I found online there is a seam sealer on the rocker panel that needs to be peeled off for the install. That and a couple of other steps outlined in the instructions about adding or removing items have me wondering just what I am going to find. Has anyone taken a set of these factory installed running boards off? Will there be anything that needs to be added to get it back to a factory condition for a Santa Cruz Limited without side steps?

there's a trim piece that is disposed of during install I think
Edit: Yeah it's discarded

If I remember correctly from when I added mine you also remove some of the clips that hold the Panel cover on.

So if you've had those items discarded and you want to remove the side steps, what's the end result going to look like???
Not that I like seeing more plastic, but if it shows bare painted body below the rest of the plastic cladding, that's not cool. I wonder if roll on or spray can bed liner or undercoating would be an alternative???

Looks like there lots of holes and notches, and its a bit recessed compared to the edges of the fender flares. I wonder how much it would cost to buy that original piece and hardware.

Glad they have those install directions online. Looks like the rocker panel covers need to be added, along with some pressure clips, grommets and seam sealer. Almost afraid to ask Hyundai what those will cost, but if that is all there is that will be easy enough.

Maybe try to find someone who wants to buy the side steps and have them give you their old parts as part of the deal.

Is it really worth the hassle to remove them? What do you not like about them? Personally, I think they add to the look of the SC. However, I would also counter that they are mostly cosmetic, and my concern would be that they get in the way if I was to try to simply step over them to get in and out of the SC. I would want them for looks, but not for function.
I would be interested in buying the side steps off you and trading you the panels
Sent you PM.
Not knocking the look, and they are functional, but I just step out over them and I'd rather fab a full length tucked close rock slider for the looks, vs. these steps. Price of steel (and everything else) is crazy tho. I wouldn't mind just making a deal for the steps with some trade for the pieces that someone pulls off.

I would definitely be interested in selling mine. Can somebody who doesn't have the sidesteps post a pic of what the sill condition looks like with the doors open. I have contacted 2 different dealers regarding the installation of the steps and have only gotten a bunch of shrugged shoulders. I even sent them the pics posted in this thread. So - if I can figure out exactly what is missing, I will be more than happy to remove and ship mine off to an interested buyer.
This is what my sills look like. Doesn't seem like removing the side steps would require the installation of another piece. Thoughts?

I'm in the exact same boat, I have the factory running boards and would like to remove/sell them but want to make sure I have everything to make it look stock when they're gone.
If anyone wants to buy them and trade parts please reach out.
I haven't yet taken the time to get down there and really look closely at the process. From the pics in this thread looks like can possibly just remove them and be done. Fingers crossed.
You do have to put rocker panel covers on if you pull the side steps off. Technically you don't, but that would look ratty and leave things exposed to damage from the elements. I asked for prices from the local Hyundai dealer for rocker panel covers today. The side step installation instructions (the instructions are online everywhere) say to "discard" the rocker panel covers that you have to take off to install the side steps. If "discard" means "get rid of"... don't do that! Hyundai wants a fortune for new ones and so they've created a value on used ones. Has anyone added some side steps onto their Santa Cruz and have a set of rocker cover panels they want to sell?
Did you (or anyone) get a reply on the rocker panel covers? Still want to remove mine...
@curt007 No one replied so I bought the rocker panel covers from the Hyundai dealer. They wanted over $600 for each panel. We talked a bit and I wanted those sidesteps off so bad I gave the dealer $410 each for the panels. I asked if the warranty was affected at all if there were ever to be a problem. They said if they did the install the warranty would not be affected. In for a penny, in for a pound, I gave them $175 to put them on. That almost seemed reasonable after the panel costs. I had to wait for three weeks for an appointment. That's total bs, I hope the dealer here gets that fixed soon.

I am going to sell the sidesteps and recover some of my money. I'm sure after selling them I'll be out around $500 for the swap. That's funny, I figured when I bought the SC with the sidesteps I'd just pull them off and sell them and be money ahead. Lmao at myself. Not having to stretch way out and over the sidesteps when getting out of the rig is worth it though. I really, really hated that. Something this height doesn't need sidesteps anyways. Plus they reduce your ground clearance, and they are so skinny you can't really use them. I tried them once to get to the roof of the truck when washing it, worthless. If there is a morale to the story it's don't buy your SC with sidesteps if you don't really want sidesteps.

I will have my sidesteps for sale as soon as I get some shipping boxes lined up and figure out the shipping costs. I live in Anchorage, Alaska, and I doubt I will find someone up here to buy them.

Anyone in Georgia/Florida/South Carolina looking to get rid of their side steps? Sell? Trade for the panels?
I realize most people find them useless, but I drive with my seat bottom up high, which means when I get in and out, I’m causing excessive wear on the seat cushion. Really don’t want to pay $800-900, but would like to have the steps to save my seat.

You may have already found your answer, but here’s some pics. It looks to be a very similar plastic panel minus the bolt access covers. Then a similar rubber weather strip. Where are you located? I’m looking to get some steps.
