What am I missing here…

Manual 6-22 “Good Driving Practices”:

• Driving uphill or downhill, shift to D (Drive) to drive forward or R (Reverse) to drive backwards, and check the gear position indicated on the cluster before driving. If you drive in the opposite direction of the selected gear, the engine will turn off and a serious accident might be occurred due to the degraded brake performance.

I think it means, if you are coasting forwards down a hill, don't try to use reverse to stop the forward motion (and, of course, vice versa.)

This phrasing: "accident might be occurred" makes me think that English is not the author's first language.
