Went to the Maverick Truck Club and had to deal with a bunch of folks telling me the bed carry weight is 661 pounds and grab a screen shot of the Santa Cruz manual which gives a warning not to exceed 661 pounds. Of course when you read how to calculate payload on the same page they explain minus 5 passeners at 150 pounds each as an example from the sticker on the door of 1411. When you do the math it comes out to 661 pounds. Obviously that is either a coincidence or Hyundai wrote something in the manual that confuses some folks. Which is it?

The 1,411 is correct according to this
And right after saying that Hyundai says in their manual to not exceed 661 pounds in the cargo bed. With big warning sign that the Maverick folks point at and laugh about how little the truck can haul. That is the number they use for omparison to their Mavericks 1500 pounds. Hyundai has done themselves a disservice by puting that in their Manual. So again where does Hyndai explain that number as the reslt of taking 5 passengers at 150 pounds each away from 1411 to get to that 661 pounds?

I think they are trying to be "safe than sorry" here as they don't know how many passengers you could be carrying at a given time with the bed fully loaded. They should have made a side note explaining the reasoning, but oh well

The 661 comes from Hyundai doing some mental math - the figure allows for having multiple passengers… not sure why they did that

1,400lbs is also misleading - there‘s a thread here some where, I did the math… The base SE FWD, if you do the math, can carry over 1,700 - less as you go up trim levels and it gets heavier.

Maverick 1,500 is also based on not having any passengers - get 4 Americans in the cab and the load capacity goes to 500lbs 🤪😂

Typical, sign of the times - ppl spew garbage with out understanding the fact’s.

In this case the garbage was the crummy job Hyundai did in putting that warning in the manual. I explained that number was less passengers and the just keep putting a copy of the warning in the manual in response. I went so far as to tell them the sticker on the door that says payload 1411 isn't even accurate since on my SEL 4WD the numbers curb weight 3862 and total gross weight of 5611 and they still go back to that warning.

Personally, I would waist my breath on their forum…
I suspect, the specification writer for Hyundai USA, isn’t experienced in writing for a truck…

This calculation has caused confusion since Day 1. I believe it was Alex on Autos YT that even called some rep at Hyundai to clarify since the number made no sense based on specs. However it was too late... the misinformation was immediately picked up and Mav fanboys used it as proof that the SC isn't a real "truck". Of course they forget their (non) truck Mav tows 1,000lbs LESS then the SC.

Why doesn’t someone just copy and paste the GVWR info for the Maverick? (Kudos to GTAcruz for posting ours to clarify things)
All of the totals for weight carrying….passenger loading etc require a little math, though most of us don’t do it because we know our own situations and are usually well within limits.
Its not like you can put five 200 lb people in the Maverick and ignore it as it relates to GVWR and payload.
They have to do the same calculations.

It appears we now live in a world where people can say whatever they want, without context, knowledge, experience, or common sense…..and insist they are correct…..as long as there is a flock of “sheep” they can convince to go along with them. Not just in Forums, but everywhere. Strange times.

Because I have a Hybrid on order besides my SC and there are a ton of folks over there misinformed on the SC along with folks that get misled by the fanboys that don't think Ford has any problems at all even when owners complain on their site...

Not that I don't trust Alex, but the manual says you can't put more than 661 lbs in the bed. It's not misinformation or rumors on the internet. That is what Hyundai wrote in the manual. Internet reviews also say that you can put 200 lbs on top of the tonneau cover but the manual specifically says to never put any load there. Hyundai says one thing to the press and puts something different in the manual. Which of those two things do you think matters if you have a warranty issue? Hence the OP asking Hyundai to get their stuff together.

My man… use some common sense.. 600lbs payload limit would mean, you can only have three (3) passengers weighing 200lbs each… 🤪

The owners manual gives you examples of how the payload works (yes that same owners manual)

For your reference - here is the payload by trim, directly from Hyundai
