Well, it would be handy for those without a compatible phone, but let's say you have a teenaged driver in the house and two key fobs. Parents each have a key and can give the kid the NFC card without worrying about them losing a $X00 key fob. And, for fun, it's an iPhone-only house where the app isn't an option.

I'm also not entirely clear, not having used/experienced it myself yet, but while you can use the app for doors/start/stop/etc, I believe you still are required to have the key (or the card, if it works) on you to drive away. The phone alone may not do the job.

I'm very much looking forward to testing this stuff out for myself next month. Hopefully a current owner can shed more light on it before then.
Hi Walking Black Bear,

The SC is awesome and I think you will be a happy man! I got the Key Card to work!! Probably just pilot error. Great point on kids and using the key card. My son used to leave his gym bag open with car keys hanging out at practice and it drove me nuts to see.

Wouldn't surprise me one bit. Do you have an Android?! Try it & report back : )
Nope, iPhone. We're an Apple household.

It will really depend on the format of the tags they're using. From memory, last time I looked into buying blank tags to play with, there are several different standards. Each one programs a little differently, each one has a different amount of memory, etc. So the trick is trying to find out which standard Hyundai is using - or if they've come up with something proprietary to prevent the homebrew-inclined among us from doing just this sort of thing.

Found this forum discussion on the topic - Digital Key - Key Card Duplication | Hyundai Forums (hyundai-forums.com) - and while it sounds like they're pretty standard chips, you may need some special equipment to clone it fully. Looks like they have some software gatekeepers at work that only allow a maximum of three keys to be paired to a vehicle, two fobs and one card. So it would have to be read and cloned vs. simply programmed. From a security/theft prevention perspective, it's not a bad system. But more than three keys would be awesome where you have families where you may have 4 or even 5 drivers in the house.
Yeah, we just switched from Canon printers, using their key card access technology, to Xerox, using theirs. One of the aspects of the bid requirements was that existing key cards were required to be able to work with the Xerox system, so that we wouldn't have to reissue cards to all 22k+ employees. Even at our low price $2.25 per card, that's still about $50k, and everyone would have to have two cards, because our security doors work on the same kind of system. It was easier for Xerox to program their equipment to work with our cards.

Programmed the new NFC card with my SC using a borrowed Andriod phone. It starts the car when I put the key card in the smart phone charger but thats it. The card does not open the car door when locked. What good is that? Anyone else had this issue. The phone does it all even unlocking the car. Any help would be appreciated.

I’ve got the opposite issue. I programmed with a friend’s Android also. I can always lock/unlock the front doors (both sides). However I cannot get it to start when placing it on the wireless charger.

Here’s the kicker for me, if I use blue link app to remotely start the car, I can unlock the door with the Key card, and if I touch the wireless charger with the key card, it recognizes the card and keeps the engine running. Blue Link rep says I need to take to a dealership to diagnose.

How much effort does it take for you to start Cart with Key card? Do you have to hit a precise spot on the charger?

No, I just lay it down in the charger recess and it will start like normal. It's funny if it recognised your card durring setup in he charger then it's wierd it doesn't recognise it afterwards.

How about yours to unlock do you just swipe or touch the door handle or just get it within a few inches?Did you try the passenger door? Supposed to unlock either front door.

I'll bet both our problems are software related. The NFC works in all the locations with the android phone but the NFC key card only works half way. Also noted it says in the info on the app DO NOT leave the card in the charger whille you drive as it will damage the card. Wonder if the cards are defective (kinda doubt it)?

yes, both driver and passenger side lock and unlock. Very sensitive that the correct side faces the center of the handle for me. Thanks for the tip on not leaving the card on the charger.

What state are you in?

Fun fact ... Digital Key isn't available in Canada. Can't even install the app to try it. This has disappointed me. I was looking forward to using my phone as a key. :(

... I wonder the logic for the exclusion?
Probably the same as with all of the other incomprehensible differences in option availability differences between the two countries -- 'tis beyond the ken of man!

And, it's not just the Santa Cruz; Honda Ridgeline also has many strange model and trim differentiations between US and CA.

Wow Walking Black Bear! I didn’t know that. I wonder the logic for the exclusion?
I didn't know it either. Even had the dealer search it in their system and it came up blank. I mean, I'll live, and I still have Bluelink, but I was honestly looking forward to trying that out.

i know you had to BORROW an Android to set it up, is it possible to borrow it AGAIN? My Key Card somehow stopped working AFTER 1 month and the ONLY way i got it to work was to UNPAIR (delete) and RE-PAIR. Been working fine since about 2 months since then : )

Yes, I'll give it another go when I can get it back. Thx.

Tried the card this AM and it worked... Once! That was it... just one time. Still haven't got the loaner phone to delete it yet.
i wonder if that's some sort of safety/security thingey where it will work ONCE and then not again UNTIL you have used the fob- i will try mine tomorrow multiple times without fob on me and report back : )

I paired my digital card this evening. It took me a couple of times pairing and deleting it to get it to work correctly. At first it would start the SC but not lock/unlock the doors.

Once it was working properly, I locked/unlocked the SC several times. As well as started the engine. I'll try using the card this week and report back with my experiences.

Hallalujah!!! Can't wait to de and re program mine to see if it will fix the problem. Must be something in the card or the NFC reader in the dash. I might try removing the rubber mat in there as well while I do it. Thx!!!
